Vacation July/August 2003 - Route des Grandes Alpes

Map of Route des Grandes Alpes

The Route des Grandes Alpes is a historic route through the French Alpes, which connects the cities of Thonon-les-Bains at Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) and Menton at the Cote d'Azur, via more than 15 impressive Alpes passes. The construction of the route started officially in 1909, and the route was extended more and more throughout the 20th century. The highest passes are about 2700m above sea level, and there are height differences of more than 1700m between valleys and passes.

So that the tour is bit more of an adventure, I did it in style with an original Citroen 2CV. I made the tour in four stages, with stops in Bourg-St-Maurice, Briançon and Guillaumes. At the start and finish places, as well as at all stops in between I did camping.
