Vacation July 2001 - Innsbruck Region

After a longer pause I liked to make vacation in the Alpes again. I chose the region around Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck in Tyrole, which offers many possibilities for hiking and sightseeing.

The first three days I spent in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This town offers good sports and hiking options. It is also the starting point for many day trips. So I did a round trip on Monday, with stops at the bavarian royal castles Linderhof, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, as well as the Wieskirche. Castle Linderhof is a small castle in the green with a French style park. Castle Neuschwanstein is world-famous as the typical fairy tale castle. Very nearby is the also beautiful Castle Hohenschwangau. The Wieskirche is a remarkably magnificent baroque church, relatively secluded from larger towns in the middle of a meadow landscape. On the way to the royal castles I also made a stop in Füssen.

Tuesday was then time for a hike to the Partnachalm, with a following descent to the Partnachklamm. Here the Partnach river has cut itself 70 meters into the rock - an impressive (and wet) natural spectacle. After the crossing of the Klamm my way led me via Graseck back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

On the following day I moved on to Innsbruck and spent a night there. Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrole and has a beautiful old town (most famous: the Golden Roof). Also famous is the Hofkirche with the tomb of Emporer Maximilian. Other sights I visited were the Hofburg, the Jakobsdom, the Anna Column and the City Tower.

After this it was time for another hiking day. In Igls near Innsbruck I drove up with the cable car to the Patscherkofelhütte. From there I walked to the Patscherkofel summit (2246m). In the afternoon I continued on to the neighbouring town Patsch and the Lanser Lake.

The subsequent Friday unfortunately was very rainy. After a detour into the Stubai Valley I made a stop in the small Hall i.T.. This city had importance in the mediaval times for its salt mines. Also the mint was located here for this reason. Besides the beautiful old town I visited the mining museum and the Old Mint in the Hasegg castle.

The last day I spent in the glamorous town Seefeld i.T. Its vicinity is well-suited for hiking, so that I made a small round trip (Seefeld - Gschwandtkopf (1495m) - Auland - Seefeld). In the evening there was the Festival of the 100.000 Lights with a great fireworks, which was a nice closing for my vacation.
